The 44 mile riverway from Worcester to Pawtucket offers a
diverse and unique landscape with forests, urban areas, historic mill villages
and farmlands. The Blackstone River drops about 10 feet per mile which is
steeper than the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.
Virtually the entire length of the River is navigable by canoe
or kayak. The River lends itself to both less experienced and experienced canoe
skills and some portages (traversing land) can be difficult. There are no Class
IV or V difficulty navigational spots on the River. The estimated traverse
time is three miles per hour, but seasonal challenges or weather can alter the
course significantly.
The River ranges from flatwater (little or no current) up to
Class three currents (rapids with irregular waves, and narrow passages needing
complex maneuvering skills). There are several public access points along the
River: Click here for Boat Ramps.
