Alternatives Whitin Mill Has Another Busy Weekend

Another Weekend of Multiple Events at the Renovated Mill

It’s another busy week end at Alternatives’ Whitin Mill with openings for two art shows and a theatrical presentation. Photographs from the Fernald State School, the Blackstone Valley Art Association Spring Festival and Stepping Stone Community Theatre’s production of “Many Moons” will have things hopping at Alternatives.

In the mid 1970s, Derrick Te Paske spent a year and a half documenting the entirety of Fernald State School. The results of this endeavor will be shown at Alternatives’ Heritage Gallery in an exhibition entitled Fernald State School: Then, Now…and Again? The exhibition opens May 2nd in Alternatives’ Heritage Gallery, with an artists’ reception from 5 to 7 PM. The public is invited. The exhibition will run through June 27.

In Te Paske’s words, the photographs document “A ‘school’ which, I soon found, housed residents who were never referred to as ‘students.’” Fernald State School was opened in 1848 in Waltham. It was America’s first public facility for people who were then labeled mentally retarded. However, by the turn of the century it was an “asylum” where people were warehoused for the rest of their lives. Today it remains open although there is a strong movement to see it closed.

Te Paske’s photographs show Fernald in a variety of lights, and do much to illustrate the complicated story of the institution. Supplementing the photographs will be a showing of William Roger’s documentary on Fernald, “Front Wards, Back Wards.” Originally shown on PBS, the film looks at the entire history of Fernald School. A theatrical showing of the film will take place on May 30th at 7:00 PM in the Singh Performance Center at Alternatives. The presentation will be followed by a discussion with a panel comprised of former “students” of institutions.

The same weekend the Blackstone Valley Art Association opens its Spring Family Arts Festival. The exhibition opens Friday evening, May 2nd, with an artists’ reception from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. The exhibition and reception will be in the 1826 Paul Whitin Mill. On Saturday May 3rd, from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM the festival expands onto the Community Plaza with live entertainment, demonstrations and food.

Rounding out the weekend will be performances of James Thurber’s “Many Moons” by Stepping Stone Community Theatre Company in the Singh Performance Center.  The play uses humor to ask the question of just what it is we really want when we “ask for the moon.” Performances are Friday, May 2nd at 7:00 PM, Saturday May 3rd and Sunday May 4th at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children.

For further information please call Tom Saupe at 508-234-6232 x. 302. All events take place at Alternatives’ Whitin Mill, 50 Douglas Road in Whitinsville. Alternatives is a non-profit agency serving more than 550 adults with developmental and psychiatric disabilities in 45 programs throughout central Massachusetts.

Both a vehicle of expression and a vessel to entrap the soul:  the human

cripple, bigotry and infect the viewer and mute meaning, yet with our
bodies we find healing, love, birth, god, and even the devil.

From factory to studio

The Hope Artist Village at 1005 Main Street, Pawtucket, RI (near the Providence city line) is part of the growing arts industry. Events happen on site
Generations of Rhode Islanders know the location as the site of the former School House Candy Manufacturing Company that has been transformed into another prime site for housing work/live space for Pawtucket’s artists.
The mill structures were constructed for the Hope Webbing Company between 1889 and 1913. By 1930, the buildings were claimed to be the largest mill of its type in the world.  Plans call for the mill to also include a mix of artist workspaces, boutique retail, entertainment, theater, outdoor music, light industry, office space, food services and fitness center to complement loft style residential units.
