THE COMMUNITY PLAYERS ANNOUNCE 87th SEASON

Rhode Island's oldest community theater group, The Community Players, currently operating out of Jenks Auditorium, (across from McCoy Stadium), in Pawtucket, is proud to announce their 87th season.

The season continues in February with Ernest Thompson’s timeless story On Golden Pond, directed by Peggy Pires. Perhaps best remembered from the 1981 film adaptation starring Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn, this funny and touching comedy tells the story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, who are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond, Maine for the forty-fourth year. When their estranged daughter returns to renew her relationship – and to persuade them to keep her fiancé’s thirteen year old son for the summer – Norman and Ethel are confronted with unexpected changes. Norman's charming humor and Ethel's caring warmth are tested as Norman's health, and spirits, decline. Hailed by theatre critics as “a work of rare simplicity and beauty,” On Golden Pond is a moving sentimental family drama filled with humor and an energetic spirit.

On Golden Pond will be presented from February 1 – 10, 2008.

In the spring, Greg Geer directs and Ron Procopio music directs the sexy, sophisticated hit musical, Chicago, a dark parable of the American justice system, which tells the story of a two-bit aging chorine named Roxie Hart who becomes a headline-grabbing star by killing her two-timing lover and trying to pin it on her clueless husband. She not only avoids prison with the help of razzle-dazzle lawyer, Billy Flynn, but she uses the trial to propel herself to showbiz stardom along with another murderous jailbird, Velma Kelly. This explosive musical extravaganza is full of stylish choreography and show-stopping numbers including “All That Jazz,” “Razzle Dazzle,” “Mr. Cellophane” and “Class.”

Chicago will be presented from April 4 – 20, 2008.

Rounding out the season is Neil Simon’s Tony Award-winner Broadway Bound, directed by Brian Mulvey. In the poignant conclusion of Neil Simon’s acclaimed autobiographical trilogy, (which includes Brighton Beach Memoirs and Biloxi Blues), Eugene Jerome and his older brother Stanley are trying to break into the world of professional comedy writing, while coping with the breakup of their family. When they find a job where they can write short comedic skits for the radio, they use their dysfunctional family as inspiration and when the material is broadcast, the family is upset to hear a comedy rendition of their trials and tribulations. Feelings get hurt, family secrets come out and the brothers discover harsh truths about who they are, while learning lessons about love, forgiveness and hope.

Broadway Bound will be presented from June 13 – 22, 2008.

Memberships for the 2007-2008 season are currently available. Individual tickets are $15.00 for non-musicals and $18.00 for musicals. Members can enjoy substantial savings with two different membership options. A regular $45 membership entitles the bearer to one ticket for each of the four shows. The second option, the Flex-Tix Pass, has become enormously popular because of its flexibility. For $50, the Flex-Tix pass provides members with four tickets to be used as desired. For example, all four tickets can be used for one show, two tickets can be used for two different shows – be creative, the choice is yours!

For general information, please call (401) 727-0702.

For reservations, please call (401) 726-6860.  (Tickets go on sale 4 weeks prior to the opening date for each show.)
