Opening of the Annual New Artist Member Show

 The Rhode Island Watercolor Society announces the opening of its Annual New Artist Member Show. The exhibition features original watermedia paintings created by new Artist Members accepted during 2008. The Society encourages all to attend the Opening Reception to be held on Sunday, January 25, 2009 from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Society’s Gallery, and meet the participating new Artist Member artists. One of the oldest watercolor organizations in the United States, the Society serves an active membership of over 300 artists throughout New England.  

The exhibit and sale of paintings runs from Sunday, January 25, through Thursday, February 12, 2007, at the Society’s Gallery, located at the J. C. Potter Casino (Boat House) in Slater Memorial Park, Armistice Boulevard, Pawtucket, RI.  Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM and Sunday from 1 to 5 PM.  Admission to the exhibition is free and open to the public.

An  Unexpected Jewel in the Valley

 An amazing treasure of art  is tucked away in the historic industrialist straw hat-maker  Knowlton's former church in West Upton. Many of us drive by this church often but inside is a magnificent art gallery filled with masterpieces from the late 15th century to the 21st.
 
Spaightwood Galleries Presents a very special exhibit,
Marc Chagall as Printmaker: Drypoints, etchings, and lithographs 1923-1984 showing currently until April 19, 2009. 
 
As the cold weather sets in, come marvel at Chagall's  black and white works which allow us to marvel at his poetic vision of life. His works in color cheer our spirits and replenish our faith.  The show will feature about 160 of Chagall's images drawn from our inventory of over 250 different Chagall works.
 
One of the most dominant artists of the 20th century, Chagall attempted to reshape the way we see and are seen. From his earliest paintings, depicting the ghettoized Russian Jews in their small villages, not as prisoners but as free, to explore the unknown world of their fantastic visions, to his last works, which meditate on the mysteries of love, artistic creation, and the joys of life, Chagall demonstrates the triumph of the imagination and celebrates its ability to free us from the constraints of daily life.
 
This lovely gallery is striking with its varied artists' works that you'd be surprised to hear are being exhibited in the little town of Upton, MA. It is the culmination of art works gathered over decades by two retired professors, the Weiners,  who moved to the area to be close to their grandchildren.

Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra Announces Another Inspiring and Dynamic Concert Series for 2008-09

The 2008-09 CHSO season includes two Sunday afternoon Family Symphony Concerts, and five Saturday evening “classical/pops” concerts.  Several Saturday evening  performances will be repeated with Sunday matinees.  A full schedule and brief description of each program follows below.

Highlights of the 2008-09 CHSO season include the annual Holiday Pops concert, featuring a Sunday matinee performance. Following the holiday break, the CHSO season will continue in January with “Winter Romance” featuring Baritone David Murray, who starred as Emile DeBecque in Claflin Hill’s 2007 production of “South Pacific.”

 In March, Claflin Hill will join forces with The New World Chorale in a two-performance weekend of the popular Broadway show “The Music Man.” The CHSO season will conclude on April 4th with a truly innovative “Symphony Rocks” concert, featuring the music of the Beatles, The Moody Blues and other “60s Rock” legendary bands, starring international Pop star and Milford resident Mauricio Morais.

All concerts take place at the Milford Town Hall, located at 52 Main Street in Milford.  The Milford Town Hall is handicapped accessible, and there is free parking available at Town Hall, Middle School East parking lot, and on the side streets surrounding the venue. Season or individual concert tickets, may be purchased either online at www.claflinhill.org or by telephone at 508-478-5924.

About the Worcester Art Museum

The Worcester Art Museum, which opened to the public in 1898, is world-renowned for its 35,000-piece collection of paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, photography, prints, drawings and new media. The works span 5,000 years of art and culture, ranging from ancient Roman mosaics to Colonial silver, Impressionist paintings and contemporary art.  Dedicated to the promotion of art and art education, the Museum offers a year-round studio art and art appreciation program that enrolls over 6,000 adult and youth students each year. Public tours are offered Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m., September through May. Audio tours are also available in English and Spanish.

Museum hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. (evening hours sponsored by Commerce Bank), and Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.  Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and full-time college students with current ID, and FREE for Members and all youth 17 and under.  Admission is also FREE for everyone on Saturday mornings, 10 a.m.-noon (sponsored by The TJX Companies, Inc. and Massachusetts Electric, a National Grid Company). The Museum is located at 55 Salisbury St., Worcester, Mass., easily accessible from the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90), Route 290 and Route 9.  Free parking is available near entrances on Salisbury, Lancaster and Tuckerman streets.
