The Church of the Assumption celebrates its 80th Annual Greek
Festival, serving tradition Greek cuisine to more than 8,000 hungry
attendees.
It’s all about food! With a tradition (and reputation) of serving
outstanding Greek food, the community bands together with strict
guidelines for all of the cooking and baking. For uniformity in
quality and flavor, the women of the parish bake all of the pastries
on the premises in the parish professional kitchen. The men, as is
traditional in the culture, prepare all of the meats.
The Stratis family will, as they have for the past 18 years, prepare
and serve the special Friday evening menu of ‘authentic Greek family
recipes from the villages.’
Traditional Greek foods are served including a ‘sampler
plate’ (Pastitso - hamburg,
macaroni casserole, Moussaka - eggplant & hamburg casserole,
Spanakopita - spinach
& feta in filo, and Stuffed Grape Leaves- Hamburg with Rice.
On Saturday and Sunday, an ‘old-world’ favorite, traditional lamb
shank with vegetable dinner (Greek Osso Buco) will be served.
FILLO BAKING DEMONSTRATIONS.
The ladies of the Philoptochos Society will, at designated times on
Saturday and Sunday, demonstrate the ‘art of baking with fillo.’ They
will prepare Baklava (honey/nut pastry) and Spanakopita (spinach &
Feta cheese in fillo dough), and one of the ladies will demonstrate
working with Kataifi, a ‘shredded fillo’ dough. Cookbooks from Krinos
Foods and Athens Foods companies will be available.
The feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, celebrated on August
15, is a major feast day in the Orthodox religion. It is the
celebration of this all-important feast day that the parishioners of
the Church of the Assumption wish to share with the community at
large. Come join us for an afternoon of (delicious) family fun!
The parish invites all to come Experience a Taste of Greece.
