Visioning for Northbridge
Welcome to Northbridge - or is it Whitinsville,
Whitins Station, Linwood, Quaker City, Riverdale,or Plummers Corner, Rockdale or
Riverdale? Northbridge
stands as a testament to the success of mill villages throughout the 19th and
20th centuries when production was expanding so greatly that immigrant labor
from Canada, Holland and Armenia was imported. Whitin Machine Works was a
dominant textile machine manufacturer worldwide for nearly a hundred years along with several
other mills - until the Depression set in. However, they flourished again until
the downward turn in the 1950s with union demands and other factors. Now, these
mills stand, mostly renovated into housing and various businesses along the Blackstone
River. Home of Lookout Rock through which the bike trails pass
and which overlooks the meandering River below, this picturesque
Valley community's outskirts are filled with horse farms and rural
settings. Northbridge is also the home to Alternatives,
a social service agency with deep roots within the community, including a
theatre stage for local groups and many other events throughout the year. The Whitin
Center is a recreational and fitness facility offering two swimming pools, a
gym that is for rent inexpensively at times, and weight training facilities, kids
summer camps, a preschool and much more.
Northbridge High School is known throughout the
Valley as fielding some extremely competitive sports teams and big crowds attend
most games, whatever the sport. A new high school was recently built.Northbridge
is also home to the Whitinsville Christian School. An approval was recently
acquired to upgrade the Streetscape and signage along Main Street. Northbridge is also home to the Blackstone
Valley Chamber of Commerce which has over 600 members of local businesses.
Its active Tourism Committee promotes local attractions and events highlighting
the American Industrial and rural farmlands past.
