Summer camp full of excitement
August 10, 2007 - The month of July saw the first few weeks of Boy Scout camp and the Thunder Valley District Cub Scout day camp where hundreds of boys enjoyed everything the summer had to offer.
Boy Scout Camp

Camp Yawgoog, one of two resident camps of the Narragansett Council, B.S.A., opened for business again on July 2. Camp Yawgoog, in Hopkinton, R.I., encompasses 1,600 acres surrounding Yawgoog Pond and bordering Wincheck Pond. Broken up into three sub-camps, thousands of Boy Scouts from across the northeastern United States attend the 92-year-old camp each year. Hundreds of boys from Thunder Valley have attended Yawgoog again over the last five weeks with three more weeks to go in August.

Scouts can earn Merit Badges and other advancement opportunities at the various program areas, including the Crafts Center, Nature Lodge, Camp Craft, the archery and rifle ranges, the Challenge Center and waterfronts. Other activities include lifeguard training, geo-caching, kayaking, trap shooting, farm mechanics, the Counselor-In-Training Corps., and many others.

Camp Cachalot, located in the Myles Standish State Forest in Plymouth, Mass., is the other Boy Scout resident camp in the Narragansett Council, B.S.A. Camp Cachalot sits on 880 acres surrounding Five Mile Pond. Cachalot offers many of the same activities as Camp Yawgoog, including kayaking, lifeguard training, the Counselor-In-Training Corps., high adventure courses and the merit badge programs.

Cachalot opened on July 8 this year and is a popular camp for Boy Scout Troops in southeastern Mass. Log onto www.campcachalot.org or at www.narragansettbsa.org for more information.
Cub Scout Camp

The Thunder Valley District Day Camp week took place from July 9-13 at Cub World at the 1,600-acre Buck Hill Scout Reservation in Burrillville, R.I. Cub World offers four “theme” areas: The Pease High Seas Adventure, Bridgeton Castle and the Wild West Dodge City. The Tall Ships, Castle Keeps, and Mining Camp Bunkrooms all accommodate 48 campers.

Camp program activities include marksmanship at BB and Archery Ranges, aquatics in the Swimming Pool, Boating and Fishing at “Crater Lake”, Pedal Kart races at the Golden Nugget Speedway; and trail hikes based at the Nature Center. The camp program is built around fun, age-appropriate activities that will satisfy various advancement requirements. In addition, boys gain immeasurable self confidence as they master new skills and meet new friends.

Over the year, Cub Scouts have taken part in many different Den and Pack activities, and Day Camp ties the program year together. This year’s Day Camp theme was American Dreamers and Doers.
There are several other day camp weeks that ran through July and again this month at the other Council-owned camps as well, including Champlin Scout Reservation in Cranston, Camp Aquapaug in South Kingstown, Colt State Park in Bristol, the Fall River Rod and Gun Club and at Camp Cachalot.
New to Camp Yawgoog this year is the Webelos resident camp program for second-year Webelos. They receive the same opportunities at Yawgoog as the older Boy Scouts, such as the advancement programs and other fun activities.

Other summer camp opportunities for Cub Scouts include the Adventure Weekends and Family Camp.

Cub Scout Recruitment Rallys

School will begin for most students at the end of August and the beginning of September, which is the prime time for Thunder Valley Cub Scout Packs to recruit new members.

Packs throughout the area will be holding Rallys for new boys to see first-hand what activities they will be participating in, what they will be learning and how much fun they will have in their Scouting experience. Parents will meet the leadership of the pack, communicate with other parents and see the benefits Scouting offers their children.

Pack leaders from throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts attended the West Bay Cub Scout Rally Roundtable on July 31 at Evelyn’s Villa Restaurant in West Warwick. There they learned about what is new for the 2007 Cub Rally season and received promotional lawn signs, posters, bookmarks, mini Boys’ Life, stickers, and other helpful hints and marketing materials as well as great food.

The East Bay Cub Scout Rally Roundtable was held on August 9 at White’s of Westport in Westport, Mass.
