ENJOY THE MAGIC OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON THROUGH HISTORY, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

 

The festive spirit of the Holiday Season comes alive for residents and visitors of Rhode Island’s Blackstone River Valley over the December 13-14 weekend.

 

Explore fascinating convergences of heritage, culture and creativeness reflecting the Valley’s innovation and inventiveness that helped to spark America’s Industrial Revolution over two centuries ago.

 

During the weekend travel along scenic byways, attend arts shows and see live theater featuring captivating Holiday Season themes.

 

Captivating history and storytelling

Sunday, December 14, from 2-4 pm, the historic Hearthside House, located along Lincoln, RI’s scenic Great Road, is the setting for a reading of the children’s favorite modern Holiday Season classic The Polar Express, written by Rhode Island based author Chris Van Allsburg.

 

Guests will hear the story accompanied by a pianist, and includes a sing-along, hot chocolate and holiday cookies. Seating is limited and tickets are $10/person and must be purchased in advance.

 

Hearthside is a beautifully preserved, early 19th century Federal-style mansion built by Stephen Hopkins Smith from lottery winnings and has a fascinating romantic history.

Holiday arts and crafts

December 11-14 is the last week this year for the annual Foundry Art Show & Sale, happening at the Pawtucket Armory, 172 Exchange Street, Pawtucket, RI (located next to Tolman High School)

 

Show hours are Thursday-Friday from 12 noon-8 pm, Saturday-Sunday 10 am-6 pm.

 

See and buy a variety of original artworks and handcrafts from over 60 local and regional artists in every type of art medium.

Live on stage

Also located inside the Pawtucket Armory is The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre, one of Rhode Island’s most respected performing arts venues.

 

From December 11-23, Gamm Theatre presents the limited engagement of Miss Pixie’s Cable Access Holiday Extravaganza! The show, which is not recommended for small children, centers on a former child star and her memories of Holiday Seasons, as her checkered past is played out in front of a live audience.

 

Tickets are: $25. (Pay just $20 when if ordered by November 30. Tickets for the Preview performance on December 11 are only $15. Discounts for groups of 10 or more.

SEASON’S GREETINGS FROM BLACKSTONE RIVER VALLEY!

 

Celebrate the festive Holiday Season with great entertainment

 

The traditions of the Holiday Season come alive through the magic of live and local entertainment happenings around Rhode Island’s historic Blackstone River Valley over the Christmas and New Year holiday period between December 20-January 4.

 

Experience fun and festive acts on stage and in concert close to home, each with Holiday Season themed selections performed in amongst the cultural heritage of the Northern Rhode Island region.

 

Holiday ballet

Friday through Sunday, December 19-21, Stadium Theatre at Monument Square, Woonsocket, RI presents the holiday classic The Nutcracker performed by the Heritage Ballet.

 

See this rendition of the story of a young German girl who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King with seven heads. 

 

Shows are December 19 at 10:15 am, December 20 at 7:30 pm and December 21 at 2 pm. Tickets at $20, $25 and $30.

Seasonal melodies

Sunday, December 21, at 2:30 pm, the historic Chepachet Free Will Baptist Church, 1213 Putnam Pike, Glocester, RI presents a holiday Music at the Meeting House Concert offering an Old Time Christmas Celebration in song.

 

Hear local musicians perform several seasonal tunes inside this 1821 built meeting house, which was built similar to the early 19th century meeting houses found in other historic New England villages.

Ring in 2009 in style!
