The American Cancer Society to Paint the State Purple
To Increase Awareness about Relay For Life
February 25-29, 2008

The American Cancer Society is encouraging all Rhode Islanders to help “Paint the State Purple” to increase awareness about Relay For Life during a special week of free activities, February 25-29. All Rhode Islanders are welcome to join in the fun as purple blankets the state.

“We are thrilled to celebrate with the community while helping to raise awareness of the fight against cancer here in the state,” said Paula Montgomery, state vice president of income development for the American Cancer Society. “Cancer affects so many people we know – loved ones, coworkers, neighbors - this show of support and encouragement is a great way to support survivorship, remember those we have lost and promote education while kicking off the 2008 Relay For Life season.”

Purple is the official Society color of Relay For Life and survivorship. You can show support to help eliminate cancer by wearing purple, placing a purple ribbon on your car, creating your own Relay For Life team or simply by asking a friend to get involved

Last year 17 Relay For Life events were held in Rhode Island raising more than $1 million with 8,000 participants honoring 814 local cancer survivors. This year 20 events will take place around Rhode Island from Woonsocket to Westerly and everywhere in between.

At events in 4,800 communities nationwide last year, teams of families, friends and coworkers join together to CELEBRATE the lives of those who have battled cancer, REMEMBER those lost and FIGHT BACK against a disease that takes too much. In fact, one in every 100 people in the United States participate in Relay For Life.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a unique community overnight event that allows individuals from all walks of life to join in the fight against cancer.  The event raises cancer awareness and funds for research, education, advocacy and local patient service programs while serving

as a celebration for cancer survivors, a memorial for loved ones lost, and a rally for the community to fight cancer. The Society is also a source for comprehensive cancer information through its website, www.cancer.org and its toll free number, 1-800-ACS-2345, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
