Spring events at Slater Mill

Come celebrate Spring with five events at Slater Mill

Pawtucket, RI:  Slater Mill, located at 67 Roosevelt Avenue in the heart of Pawtucket, offers five events between March 28 and April 27.

The Pawtucket Visitors Center, directly across from Slater Mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island will host its second in a series of three Twisted History lectures on Friday, March 28 at 7PM.  The Legacy of Corruption in the Ocean State explores Rhode Island’s colorful history of corruption- from its founding to its years as a haven for smugglers and slavers, from its ugly political wars of the nineteenth century to the present day.  Edward Achorn, Deputy Editor of the Providence Journal Editorials will be presenting this lecture.  There is a suggested donation of $10.  Reservations are requested and can be made by calling 401-725-8638.

On March 30, 2008 from 11AM- 3PM, Slater Mill presents Invention Convention as part of its Free for All Sunday series.  Families and young inventors are welcome to take part in this workshop where they will learn how machines operate.  Children are asked to come and bring their own inventions from home for a special “Science Fair” show & tell in the second floor of Slater Mill.  Also, participants can explore using their imagination with various components at our play and invention station. This event is free!

As part of Slater Mill’s Curator Salon series, the Mill’s own curator takes a look at the earliest types of sewing machines from our archives and how they revolutionized clothing manufacturing in the 19th century. This event will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2008 from 7-9PM at the Wilkinson Mill (on the Slater Mill site). This event is geared toward anyone interested in history, textiles and “behind the scene” information. The cost is $15 for members, and $20 for non-members.  Please make reservations by Tuesday, April 1, 2008 by calling 401-725-8638.

The last in Slater Mill’s Twisted History lectures, Fantastic Archaeology: Stories of frauds, fakes and facts in New England will be held on Friday, April 11, 2008 at 7PM in the Pawtucket Visitors Center directly across from Slater Mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. At this lecture archaeologist Alan Leveillee explores whether UFO’s, Celts and Vikings have left their marks upon New England and if crop circles, mysterious letters on stones and strange rock arrangements are evidence of such visitation.  Learn about the tools of archaeology and how they help in sorting fact from fiction. There is a suggested donation of $10.  Reservations are requested and can be made by calling 401-725-8638.

The last Free for All Sunday in April will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2008 from 11AM-3PM on the Slater Mill site.  Everyone is welcome to attend this Spring Fling celebration.  The Mill will have special discussions in our garden to let you know about our heritage and kitchen gardens.  At 2PM, “Ocean Bones”- a multi piece trombone group will lead us into the Spring season with a mini-concert. This event is free!
